Drama Post-Performance Reflection
In this play we can really see the difference between the relationships and conflicts between the members of the family, and how they change from the start of the play to the end. At the start of the play, we have a happy British family celebrating the engagement of two young fellows whereas in the end, we can really see how this atmosphere has changed: The engagement between the two fellows breaks (Sheila and Gerald), a young girl is devastated (Sheila) becase of the death of a lady in her mid-twenties and the father of them all gets angry because he has discovered things which he never knew about, such as the drinking of his son and the cheating of his future son in law towards her daughter! Partecipating in the play really changed they way I understood its meaning and also the way certain characters had to behave. I must say that the way I felt about this play was very different before I impersonated one of the characters (Mr.Goole), because reading did not make me see the other character's facial expressions and it did not make me feel the anger that the other characters felt towards me as much as actually performing it. Being able to perform this play also made me understand more about my character as well because I know understood that the inspector must be someone who knew Eva Smith (the girl who suicided) before the suicide, and I think that because, as we discover in the end, he was not a police inspector, meaning he could have only gotten the information he had on Birling's family if he was someone close to te girl. Because of this, towards the end of my speech, I made a sad voice, almost as if I was holding back a cry, and I did that in order to show how I really felt towards the girl. I did my best while performing, trying to never break out of character, which is something that I think I did well. I tried to stay as serious as possible and even if the inspector is one of the characters which does not have a lot of opportunities to add emotions to the play (cry, shout, get angry etc.) I tried to do so as much as possible. |
