The author wrote in first person so that we could relate better to the protagonost and step in his shoes, seeing the world through his eyes.
It shows how propaganda can affect society as a whole, making people judge and discriminate others negatively just becaise they are seen as different.
By stepping in the shoes of the person being discriminated, the reader understand how any person being descriminated and left out feels.
