Drama Project Reflection
Reflection Number 2
- What is interpretive or dramatic reading? How is this reading different from the solo or class reading you have been doing?
There is a big difference between dramatic reading and interpretive reading. Interpretive reading is reading a text which has not been memorised to the audience. This type of reading is used when reading a story without any particular emotions and feelings, which are both very important if trying to convey any kind of message or lesson via reading a story. On the other hand, dramatic reading is "the complex version of interpretive reading" where the reader becomes the characters, he starts feeling what the character feels, starts speaking as the character would, feels the theme around him, the atmosphere surroundig him. Also, in dramatic reading, you are not just plainly reading a piece of writing, you are reading it, and I know that I repeated the word "reading" twice and that is because there are two kinds of reading within dramatic and interpretive, and these are: plain reading and what I like to call "real reading" ("emotional reading"). Within dramatic reading, you are really reading, and getting your message accross to the audience with the use of your voice and body, whereas in interpretive reading, you are plainly reading a piece of text whic does not mean anything to you... In my opinon, solo reading (like the one we did in class), is better than "plain reading", but will not beat "emotioinal reading" because in solo reading you are not the character in the book and that is because you are simply not acting it out. Again, we have to look at both sides because solo reading has its pros and cons... One of its cons is the fact that you are not acting it out meaning you are not really feeling the character. But in solo reading you can work with your imagination in your own way. If you want a character to look like what your imagination pictures, go ahead, you can... That is becase in solo reading you are working (reading) alone with yourself...
- I hope that I did not mistake any of the above with the wrong definitions and if I did... :)
